Syphilis

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection caused by Treponema pallidum. Early-stage syphilis is easily treatable; delayed diagnosis and therapy can result in severe complications. Cases are rising among young people.

Transmission:
Through vaginal, anal, oral sex, contact with a syphilitic ulcer (chancre), or vertical transmission from mother to fetus. Not spread through shared items, toilets, or clothing.

Stages:

  • Primary — painless ulcer (chancre) at site of infection (3–6 weeks)
  • Secondary — rash, fever, enlarged lymph nodes, hair loss, sore throat, headaches
  • Latent — asymptomatic, can last for years
  • Tertiary — organ, nervous system damage, blindness, paralysis, dementia, fatal outcome

Diagnosis:

  • Antibody tests
  • Microscopic exam of chancre
  • PCR (high precision)
  • Pregnant women must be tested!

Treatment:
Early syphilis — penicillin injections. Alternatives: tetracycline, doxycycline. Late syphilis requires prolonged therapy.
