Trichomoniasis is a common sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the protozoan Trichomonas vaginalis. More frequent in women, but also found in men. Main route of transmission is unprotected sex; rarely, household transmission (towels, linens) is possible.

Symptoms in men:

  • Urethral discharge
  • Painful urination
  • Sometimes prostatitis symptoms

Symptoms in women:

  • Burning and itching of the genital area
  • Yellowish or foul-smelling discharge
  • Pain during intercourse or urination
  • Purulent or bloody discharge
  • Trichomoniasis often has mild or no symptoms but can be transmitted to a partner.

Complications:

  • High risk of HIV infection
  • Premature birth (in pregnant women)
  • Increased risk of cervical and prostate cancer
