Vitiligo is a skin disorder characterized by depigmentation of areas due to the loss of function in pigment cells (melanocytes). The exact cause is unknown, but autoimmune, genetic, stress, nervous, and viral factors may contribute.
Main symptom: the appearance of depigmented (white) spots, which can increase in size and deform, most commonly on the face, hands, and wrists. Affected areas are more sensitive to sunlight and UV, and hair in these zones may also lose pigment. Vitiligo is not contagious.
