Atopic dermatitis

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease of genetically determined allergic origin. This condition is characterized by an inherited predisposition and is often triggered by multiple factors: allergen intake with food, skin contact with irritating materials (such as clothing), and improper skincare.

Atopic dermatitis in children typically develops at an early age—most often from 2–3 months—and may persist for 3–5 years or even throughout life. Main symptoms include dryness, redness, severe itching, and skin rashes.

The risk of developing AD is significantly higher in children with a family history of allergic reactions, as well as when the mother consumes large amounts of allergenic foods (such as citrus fruits, strawberries, chocolate, etc.) during pregnancy, especially in the third trimester.

It is important to note that many parents mistakenly believe atopic dermatitis is always caused by food allergies. In reality, this disease is multifactorial, and food allergy is only one of the possible contributing factors.

Recent studies also associate AD with impaired barrier function of the epidermis. A weakened skin barrier allows allergens and microbes to penetrate more easily, triggering inflammation.
